Unprotected Sun Exposure Is Damaging To Your Skin

With the summer months upon us it is especially important to focus on the care of your skin as you enjoy your outdoor activities. Any amount of unprotected exposure to the sun can have long lasting consequences. For this reason there are many products on the shelf designed to minimize sun damage.

The use of sunscreen or sunblock is critical to maintaining healthy skin as you grow older. That bronzed body may look good now, but there is a price to pay down the road. All sunscreen comes with an SPF (sun protection factor) number. This number is largely misunderstood by the public, with most people believing the higher the number the greater the protection. This is true only to a point. It is generally recommended by experts that a sunscreen with an SPF of 30, should be used and reapplied every two hours. Sunscreens with higher SPF’s do not offer that much greater margin of safety.

There are two types of sunscreen, chemical and physical. Chemical blocks absorb the energy of the uv radiation before it damages the skin and physical blocks scatter the uv rays before they reach your skin. Some sunscreens employ both methods. Find one that is gentle enough for every day use. It is also a good idea to cover up with clothing during the mid day hours.
