April is Rosacea Awareness Month

What Is Rosacea? It is a chronic inflammatory facial disorder that may cause frequent flushes, facial redness, and small papules to form on the cheeks, nose, chin, or forehead. In advanced stages it may cause disfigurement to the nose area, looking swollen and bumpy due to excess skin growth.

The Cause of Rosacea: Some doctors believe Rosacea to be linked to vascular disorders. The presence of a normally existing skin mite called Demodex Folliculorum, in increased numbers present on an active Rosacea patient’s face is also a suspected cause. The true underlying cause is still to be determined.

Most Common Triggers: Chronic mental and emotional stress that causes excessive pressure on the central nervous system may be the biggest trigger. Other aggravating triggers that would cause the face to flush would be: alcohol consumption, sun exposure, over exercising or extreme temperature changes, such as getting into a hot car; or stepping outside into cold weather. If Rosacea is mis-diagnosed as acne or eczema and a strong facial product is used, this may aggravate the condition.

Controlling Rosacea: While the cure is still unknown, there are many professional treatments and skin care products specially designed to control the onset of Rosacea. Natural ingredients that calm the skin and strengthen the capillary walls of the sensitive skin is of most important. Two of such are Licorice, Green Tea and Chamomile.
